Tools of Change for Publishing

Connect with Publishing Innovation

Since this topic gets raised so often I figured a few device-spotting questions were worth posing to the TOC community:

* Have you seen a Kindle in public? If so, where did you see it?

* Have you seen a Sony Reader or other standalone e-reading device?

* Have you seen more than one e-reader?

* When did you first see an iPod in public? How about a cell phone?

* When did iPods and cell phones transition from public novelties to commonplace items?

I've never seen a Kindle in the wild beyond the one I own. I did once see a woman reading a Sony Reader on a plane (during takeoff!).

I saw a woman reading on her kindle while eating breakfast one of our favorite local greasy-spoon. She seemed to be enjoying herself, and I was almost jealous until I pulled out my iPhone. Ah, an interface with lots of lush colors.

I think the first cell phone I saw was a dinosaur from the mid 90's -- one of the huge almost walkie-talkie like ones. I don't remember the first 'real' cell phone I saw - but do remember the first time I heard someone talking on their phone with their spouse at the grocery store, and the first time I was sent the picture of a product so I could also procure it on my first photo-enabled phone. Little, wonderful, life-changing things.

I've seen two Kindles: one at work (which really shouldn't count) and one at BEA. My initial surprise at the BEA Kindle was soon tempered when I realized the guy holding it works for Amazon ;)
