Connect with Publishing Innovation

Interesting analysis from Reflections of a Newsosaur looking at financially sound newspaper chains (many of them family owned) that are investigating sales despite good economic footing. From the site:

"The potential sale of the San Diego Union-Tribune and Newark Star-Ledger at the worst time in the history of newspapering can mean only one thing: The publishers don’t think the business will get any better. [Emphasis added]

"If they did, they would slash expenses, hunker down and quietly prepare to sell their papers during the next rebound in the economy."

A college classmate invited me to join a Facebook cause called "Don't Let Newspapers Die." Newspapers are a cultural touchstone, at least for people over a certain age, but they're also a tool that has been made redundant by a newer and more effective tool. It felt strange to click "Ignore" on her invitation, because I was raised with a reverence for daily newspapers. But they're as dated as the gratuitous swash caps in the Facebook group's logo (above).
