Bio
Journalist in Scotland for 18 years. Began working with hypertext in 1985 (wrote user manual for GUIDE, first hypertext authoring tools for the Macintosh).
One of five founding employees of Aldus Europe (desktop publishing software) in 1986.
Joined Microsoft in 1995 to run its typography group. Responsible for creation of Verdana and Georgia fonts for reading on screen.
Joined Microsoft eBooks project in 1998 and a readability researcher. Wrote paper entitled "The Magic of Reading" which explained how to create readable eBooks on a screen.
Co-inventor of ClearType, revolutionary display technology which dramatically improved onscreen reading.
Inventor or co-inventor on 23 US patents.
Left Microsoft in May 2009 to pursue ongoing goal of making reading from a screen as comfortable as reading from paper.
Now working as a writer and consultant.
