21st century publishing part I, reprise of thoughts on an IMDB for books

My last post garnered some attention but only for one portion of it, that's what you get for running on too long. A lot of people seemed to like the idea of an IMDB for books, or rather an IBDB. But I actually concur with one commenter who remarked that Amazon largely have this covered. Amazon may not be infallible, but it is such a handy and readily available repository of data that it is not unheard of for publishers and agents in the industry to check it for information on their own titles an… Continue

twenty-first century publishing

This post is bouncing off the Jamie Low webcast, thank you to the O'Reilly team for setting that up. Also by the recent discussion started by Richard Herley about a dedicated book review site. I did! Exciting. I had half-expected a public cultural instution to be first to put one in, like one of the state libraries, and I'm pretty surprised it was A&R that was first given their management strategies of the past 12 months. Nevertheless, I'm encouraged by it. I think POD will be increasingly important for bricks and mortar booksellers to stay competitive. A lot depends on what titles they make available and how fast they can ramp up their list.
