Andrew Savikas The Beta Book, 1940s style

Writing on the Magellan Media blog, Brian O'Leary points out that O'Reilly's Rough Cuts program for updating content isn't particularly novel:

In that way, Rough Cuts is an extension of a 1940 product, the Hammond Self-Revising World Atlas. Edited and printed as war broke out in Europe, the atlas entered a U.S. market at a time when no one knew what future maps mig

Thad McIlroy Microsoft, XML, Injunctions & Patents

I've just added a blog post to my site with the same title as I use here. But I want to examine a very different aspect of the issue than posted there. There are several things that intrigue me about the odd near-overlap of Microsoft winning a patent on its XML technology for Word, and days later losing a major case which, on the face of it, involves the same technology. First things first. I've been an expert witness on patent litigation cases for some 15 years. I love them because they're fi… Continue

Travis Bryant Barnes & Noble eReader for Mac - My Thoughts

So I downloaded the free Barnes & Nobel eReader 1.0 this morning, to check it out. I’m on a Mac and was glad to see that B&N rolled out versions of the readers for iPhone, Blackberry, PC and Mac all at the same time. That’s a good move. The first thing I tried to do was open some pdf’s, mobi, epub and prc files I had created earlier for use on my phone and Sony Reader, but the B&N app wouldn’t ope… Continue

Thad McIlroy The Kindle Dilemma

I think that the Kindle is the most over-hyped piece of hardware since...mmmm...the toaster oven. I have a running series of comments on my Future of Publishing blog here: http://www.thefutureofpublishing.com/blog/?s=kindle I know I'm in the minority: most people think it's, as they always say "the most important (whatever) since Gutenberg (probably) invented movable type." I think it's transitory hardware technology which Amazon is pushing in a VERY cynical way. That's not to say that the e… Continue

Thad McIlroy The Problem at Wired

A group of colleagues have an occasional email back-and-forth over something we find online discussing technology and the changes in publishing. Today's back and forth concerned the article in today's New York Times regarding Chris Anderson's problems at Wired. My comment to the group: I'm in the ranks of those who hasn't bought a copy of Wired in I don't know how long, and rarely visit the site (also do… Continue
