Tools of Change for Publishing

Connect with Publishing Innovation

I think that the Kindle is the most over-hyped piece of hardware since...mmmm...the toaster oven.

I have a running series of comments on my Future of Publishing blog here: http://www.thefutureofpublishing.com/blog/?s=kindle

I know I'm in the minority: most people think it's, as they always say "the most important (whatever) since Gutenberg (probably) invented movable type."

I think it's transitory hardware technology which Amazon is pushing in a VERY cynical way.

That's not to say that the eBooks are transitory, only that dedicated devices for reading eBooks make as much sense as dedicated devices to read your daily horoscope.

That's a provocative, deeply-researched presentation. Fascinating. Thanks for the lead.

Absolutely. I was at the BookServer event on Monday, and we'll be among the first with "live" BookServer catalogs. Hearing Morgan Stanley's Mary Meeker at Web 2.0 Summit put some data behind what's happening with the Mobile Web confirmed to me that this is an entirely new stage of digital and connected access -- with enormous opportunity.

Very funny Andrew!

Please see the following: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13772_3-10378573-52.html

I think the game is changing VERY rapidly!

I agree about dedicated readers, though I do think they'll find a niche (albeit one probably too small to support the exploding number of vendors). After all, there are people working on horoscope devices....

Agree - like with the typewriters (IBM 65xx etc) in the middle of last century. And then they've been wriped out by PC text processors. As soon as normal laptop/netbooks are easy as a newspaper, run for 4+ hrs on battery, have a display that allows me to read in daylight (..) dedicated eBook devices are dead. By the way tehre's a similar tendency with iPhone. A vendor that does (very successful) proprietary hardware and base software.
